It takes just one silicon atom to store four lithium ions. That makes silicon anodes up to 24 times more efficient than graphite anodes of your  typical lithium-ion battery ... the big drawback is that silicon likes lithium a little too much. Reacting with the lithium ions   can make the silicon anode dramatically balloon up and break the battery. Amprius and OneD are tackling this issue by growing nanowires.
