# p type substrate
 [^2]
A very lightly doped section of p-type material. High electrical resistance means current cannot pass between source and drain if there is zero voltage on the gate.
Applying a positive potential to the gate of an NMOS creates a strong electric field within the p-type and the holes in the region are repelled and electrons begin to fill the conduction band.
