# Lambda Rules

Imagine two different processes - with different design rules.
It would be better to have a scaled value, or a relative scale.
A conservative layout where we don't break any of the rules in either

Only need to learn 1 set of design rules then we can abstract!
Example:
## $\lambda$-based (scalable) design rules
You aren't allowed contacts on top of the transistor (on the gate and active) because you don't know if it's connected to the poly or the active.
Min active to unrelated poly is 1$\lambda$.

Also rules for n and p wells and implants.
$0.18\mu m$ CMOS: $\lambda$=0.1$\mu m$
So min transistor length is $L_{min}=0.2\mu m$
