# Eclipses
- When an object passes between us and the sunlight a shadow is created
- 2 types - solar eclipse and lunar eclipse
## Solar Eclipse
- Most spectacular and exciting
- Occurs when the sunlight from the sun is blocked by the moon and a shadow occurs on the earth

- Light shadow - penumbra, dark shadow - umbra
- Totality occurs in the umbra - day light becomes night for a few minutes
- Typically very small - pretty rare
- They do occur in Australia (https://www.australiangeographic.com.au/topics/science-environment/2023/04/when-is-australias-next-total-solar-eclipse/#:~:text=22%20July%202028,and%20pass%20directly%20over%20Sydney.) [2028-07-28](../../../../Calendar/Daily/2028-07-28.md) for Sydney
## Lunar Eclipse

Red moon - partial blockage of the moon.
It's red because light passes through the atmosphere as it stretches and bends around the Earth.
## Why don't these happen all the time?
- The plane that the sun is orbiting isn't the same as the plane the moon is orbiting
- It doesn't always line up
